A $6 million scholarship awarded to cosmetologists at the University of Oklahoma will give them access to more than 1,000 scholarships worth up to $100,000.
The university said in a statement that the scholarship, which began in 2013, will allow the cosmetologist to earn $70,000 after graduating.
“This scholarship will help to ensure that more women are able to receive the education they need to become the most competitive professionals they can be,” said Dr. Julie Dennison, director of undergraduate studies.
The Oklahoma University Scholarship for Cosmetologists was created to help students like the one in Oklahoma who are studying at the college and want to pursue an advanced degree in cosmetics.
“Cosmetology is the most common specialty in our profession and it is a competitive field that has been growing in popularity in the last decade,” said Jennifer McVey, the university’s associate vice president for enrollment.
“This scholarship allows students to be able to study in Oklahoma and earn an award for their time and dedication.”
The Oklahoma Scholarship for College graduates will be paid out through the Oklahoma Department of Education, according to a statement.
Oklahoma currently ranks in the top five states in cosmological education, according the American Cosmetological Association.
Oklahomans with a bachelor’s degree in their field are able apply to the program, which is funded through the Department of State’s Student Financial Aid Office.
The University of Texas at Austin has awarded a $25 million scholarship to the state’s top cosmetological school students to fund an education for students.
